Blackout

Power Outage Safety for Seniors

The weather is turning foul and the winds are picking up, we’re headed into storm season. And with this inclement weather one needs to prepare for the inevitable, blackouts.

With power outages there are many things to consider besides just the lights going dark. Heating, communication, hot water, food, vital medical devices, entertainment, are all in potential jeopardy when the power goes out.

So what should you do in case of an outage?

  • Have flashlights/electric lanterns and spare batteries nearby in easy access. Make sure you are aware of how to navigate towards them in the dark. It is not recommended to use candles or other flame-based light sources as they add a new potential for danger in the event they get knocked over.
  • Keep a supply of canned and non-perishable foods at hand. Don’t forget to also make sure you have a manual can-opener.
  • Make sure you have multiple warm layers of clothing and some spare blankets to wrap yourself up in.
  • Keep a cellphone charged and handy in the event of needing emergency communication. They will also most likely be your only source of internet connection and access to emergency information.
  • Make sure if you have any vital medical devices that they have a backup battery. Ensure often that these batteries are fully charged. It is recommended to consult with health care professionals to understand more about your specific device and what to do in the event of an emergency.

Blackouts can be a confusing and scary time. So keep your supplies in mind, and get in contact with your health professionals, in order to formulate a plan, to keep everything smooth sailing.
